Shaniwar Wada

In June 1818, the Peshwa, Bajirao II, renounced his Gaddi (throne) to Sir John Malcolm of the British East India Company and went into political outcast at Bithoor, close Kanpur in present-day Uttar Pradesh, India.

On February 27, 1828, an extraordinary flame began inside the royal residence complex. The fire boiled over for seven days. Just the overwhelming stone bulwarks, solid teak passages and profound establishments and vestiges of the structures inside the stronghold survived.
